Copy Trading

Copy Trading is a trading method where trades from one account are automatically replicated on another account. This allows traders to mirror the actions of a strategy provider without placing trades manually. Once connected, buy and sell orders are executed simultaneously based on predefined risk settings.

In prop trading, copy trading is often restricted or closely monitored. Some firms allow it under specific conditions, while others prohibit it entirely to prevent rule circumvention or account duplication.

Why Copy Trading Matters in Prop Trading

Copy trading can improve efficiency for traders managing multiple accounts or using the same strategy across platforms. It reduces execution delays and removes emotional decision making from trade entries. However, in prop trading environments, firms must ensure that each account represents independent decision making.

Understanding copy trading rules is critical. Unauthorized copying can result in an immediate breach and account termination. Traders who are permitted to use copy trading must ensure lot sizing, trade frequency, and execution stay within all risk limits to remain compliant.

Example of Copy Trading

A trader manually trades on a master account while a connected evaluation account automatically copies each trade in real time. If the prop firm allows copy trading, both accounts reflect identical entries and exits adjusted by position size settings. If copy trading is not allowed, this setup would result in a breach.
